What’s better for breakfast than freshly made French toast with fresh berries and homemade whipped cream? Nothing! And on this national holiday (July 4th!) it doesn’t hurt to have something a little more festive for breakfast! SOOO I created an amazing French toast recipe, and decorated it perfectly on theme. This recipe features battered French toast (instead of soaking the bread in eggs and milk, I soaked it in a type of crepe batter), homemade freshly whipped heavy cream that’s the perfect amount of sweet, and beautiful fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. What’s not to love?
What is Battered French Toast?
So… classic French Toast is made by soaking bread in a mixture of eggs and milk. However, when you make a battered French toast, you add some flour and some sugar to the milk and eggs to create a little more of a thicker mixture.
It’s special BECAUSE when the French toast is cooked and finished, it’s a little bit doughier, sweeter, and honestly, more filling. It’s like a sweet dessert crepe wrapped around a slice of bread, perfectly toasted and AMAZING. It’s the only French toast recipe you will EVER need.
THE ACTUAL RECIPE –
This recipe starts with a few simple ingredients:
A loaf of bread (more on that later), 4 eggs, whole milk, all purpose gluten free flour, and sugar.
For the toppings, of course, you will need fresh berries, and heavy cream. I also used some powdered sugar. The end result was not only delicious, but beautiful as well.
STEP ONE
The first step is to whisk the eggs together in a large glass or metal casserole dish. My favorite 9×9 inch glass pyrex is currently in the freezer filled with my most recent recipe: Blueberry and Banana Nice Cream! So, instead I used a cake pan. It worked the same! You can use whatever you want.
So, whisk the eggs together until completely blended. The mixture (of just eggs at this point,) should be one color and look like this:
STEP TWO
After whisking the eggs completely, add the milk. Be careful when whisking, because the mixture will be very thin.
When whisked, it should look like the second picture: light yellow, VERY thin, and slightly foamy.
Then, add the flour and sugar and whisk until combined. NOW, you have two options: you can either sift your flour to ensure there are no clumps, OR you can use my personal favorite technique. Use a blender!! After whisking the milk and eggs, add the flour and the egg mixture to a small blender and blend until thick.
Personally, I sifted and whisked, but either works!
STEP THREE
In your pan, add a few slices of bread and let soak for 2 minutes, then flip and let sit for 4-5 minutes more.
This makes sure that the batter not only coats the outside of the bread, but soaks into the inside as well.
STEP FOUR
In a skillet over medium heat, add a generous amount of butter. Once the pan is preheated, add the two or more slices of bread that have been soaked in batter. Cook for around 5-7 minutes on each side, opr until perfectly golden brown.
Remove from the heat and repeat this process until the entire loaf of bread has been made into French toast.
Decorating!!
This is my favorite part of making this recipe- turning the French toast into a delicious version of the American flag! I’m usually never patriotic, but on the Fourth of July, it is nice to be a little festive!
So I decorated my French toast using blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries… and it was DELICIOUS!!
You can decorate your however you would like… but this is what I did:
I started with plopping some whipped cream on top of the two slices of French toast, then i added blueberries to the top left corner to mimic the pattern of the American flag. Then, I added vertical striped of strawberries and raspberries to the whipped cream as well.
Then, I topped it with some powdered sugar and served it! My dad ate this plate, and let me just say… he was a big fan.
THE GLUTEN FREE BREAD
My favorite gluten free bread in the entire world is Schar brand. The texture of this bread is perfect. It isn’t crumbly, it NEVER falls apart, and it (according to my gluten-eating family) is the best gluten free bread option out there!

Battered Gluten Free French Toast
Ingredients
- 1 loaf gluten free bread I like Schar brand
- 2/3 cup whole or 2% milk
- 1/3 cup gluten free all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Powdered Sugar, optional
- 1 cup assorted berries (Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc)
Instructions
- In a large 9×9 dish, whisk the eggs together until one solid pale yellow color.
- Add the milk to the eggs and whisk until combined, then either sift the flour and sugar into the dish and whisk together OR add the milk and egg mixture and the flour and sugar to a blender and blend until combined and thicker.
- Add two or more slices of bread to the dish. Soak for 2 minutes on one side, then flip and soak for about 5 minutes on the other. This will make sure the batter seeps into the slice of bread, not just coat the outside.
- On medium heat, and a generous amount of butter to a large skillet. One heated, add the 2 pieces of battered toast and cook for about 5 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Make the whipped cream by whipping heavy cream with a spoonful of powdered sugar until soft peaks.
- Plate the french toast and decorate according to your liking! I decided to mimic the American flag, however, you can use your red and blue berries however you'd like! Top by dusting some powdered sugar on top, and serve.
- Happy July 4th!! Enjoy your day and enjoy your French toast!
