I’m in the middle of the second semester right now, and figured I would update you all on my favorite foods so far! New Orleans has some of the BEST gluten free food I’ve ever had, and I love all of the amazing options uptown around campus! If you are gluten free, and looking into Tulane, here are my favorites!
NEAR CAMPUS!!
Here are my favorite options for near campus in Uptown New Orleans!
Ba Chi
I talked about Ba Chi in another article on my blog (you can find it here!) and since last semester, it has become my favorite restaurant, not only in NOLA, but anywhere. When I’m home, I miss Ba Chi, and when I am in NOLA, I crave it constantly.
The first dish pictured is the sweet chili shrimp and rice bowl, then the kimchi fries which can be modified to be gluten free by leaving off the beef, and the bacos. Bacos are Ba Chi’s version of bao buns, aka “bao tacos” but they aren’t gluten free. Ba Chi can make them with a lettuce wrap, which isn’t always as satisfying as I think an actual bao would be.
Finally, the big photo is my absolute favorite food ever: the sweet chili tofu vermicelli salad bowl. NOTHING is better than this. The tofu is perfectly crispy, and the pickled vegetables add the perfect tang. Honestly, I would eat this for every single meal.
Jazmine Cafe
Another great option for gluten free Vietnamese food in uptown NOLA is Jazmine Cafe. In my opinion, Jazmine isn’t as great as Ba Chi, but honestly, nothing will ever top Ba Chi. Jazmine is still so delicious.
The best thing about Jazmine is the spring roll menu. It’s HUGE. Here are some of my favorite spring rolls there:
From left to right, here are the spring rolls! First is the tuna avocado, which is essentially like a sushi roll, but in rice paper. It’s delicious. Next is my personal favorite spring roll at Jazmine: the seaweed and mango roll. It’s filled with noodles, fresh mango, seaweed salad, jicama, and fresh lettuce. Lastly is the spicy tune spring roll, which is another great gluten free option!
the noodle dish I got (on the left) is the sweet and spicy noodle dish. This was AMAZING. It was similar to a pad thai dish, but with both shrimp and chicken. The bean sprouts and peanuts on the side made every bite perfect. The other photo is of my friend’s poke bowl, which may be gluten free, but I don’t remember. The great thing about Jazmine is that they have a gluten free menu, so there are multiple marked safe options!
Satsuma on Maple
My favorite brunch spot is Satsuma on Maple. They make their own gluten free bread, so all of the sandwiches can be made GF! Recently I got the green sandwich, which is arugula, spinach, and egg, avocado, tomato, and swiss. I’m usually not a huge fan of eggs, but Satsuma ever disappoints.
I also frequently get the special BLT, which is bacon, lettuce, tomato, goat cheese, and avocado mash with a side salad. It’s consistently my favorite, and depending on how hungry I am, I add an egg too!
Satsuma also has AMAZING coffee and matcha, so I always try something new when I go! I was literally there this morning, and now I’m thinking about going again. It’s just SO good.
A BIT FARTHER FROM CAMPUS!
Here are my favorite options that are more of an Uber or drive away from campus. They’re still uptown for the most part, but SO delicious!
Sofia Nola
I’ve written about Sofia before (read it here!) and I love it. Sofia has some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had, and they are amazing with gluten free!! They can make any pasta or pizza gluten free, and they are delicious.
For appetizers at Sofia, the kale salad is always a 10/10. The raw beets are surprisingly tender, and the dressing is amazing. It’s naturally gluten free, super light, and the perfect appetizer before stuffing my face with carbs. The ricotta is also delicious, and Sofia makes gluten free bread to eat it with.
For entrees, I love the spicy pizza and the alla vodka pasta. The gluten free pasta is homemade and super tender, and the pizza crust is SO yummy. Just thinking about it right now, I want it. The spicy pizza has Italian sausage, kale, parmesan, chili pepper, and hot honey.
Finally, for dessert, the flourless chocolate cake is naturally gluten free, SO fudgy, and delicious.
Superior Seafood
Superior Seafood also has amazing gluten free options, but this semester the highlight has been my birthday brunch!
I got the crab and egg white omelet, and the French 75 salad, which is my favorite salad in all of New Orleans. The omelet was so fluffy, and the salad was perfect as always! The champagne vinaigrette is perfectly balanced, and the prosciutto and melon add the perfect level of salt and sweetness.
Bearcat
Bearcat is amazing for gluten free, but there’s always a long wait. However, it’s worth it. They have gluten free buffalo cauliflower, which I loved (if you know me, you know that I’m obsessed with buffalo sauce and all things buffalo). I also loved the scallops and grits, and of course, I added the crab claws. My mom was visiting, so why not!
There are a TON of amazing gluten free food options in New Orleans, and these are just my favorites so far! I’ve been having a great second semester, and if you want to keep up on the day to day stuff, follow me on instagram!
