Recently, I’ve been on Fire Island with my family at my grandfather’s house. It’s been a family tradition to go down to the store every morning and pick up classic Fire Island bagels to eat for breakfast. Since my Celiac diagnosis, life for me became a little different every morning as I was left out of the family Fire Island bagel tradition. Naturally I would bring my own, trying various brands of gluten free bagels that often disappointed. This year, however, the brand of bagels I brought to Fire Island was excellent!
Odd Bagels
The brand I brought this year is called “Odd Bagel” and let me just tell you that they are the best gluten free bagels I’ve ever tried. Their “everything bagels” are so good that I forgot that my bagel was even different from those the rest of my family was eating. It’s. SO. Good.
Here’s the link to their website if any of you want to try them out! https://www.oddbagel.com/shop
Making the Bagel Sandwich
There are a few components to the bagel sandwich, but overall it’s pretty customizable.
In mine, I used cream cheese, avocado, salmon, red onion, and arugula.
Step One:
First toast your bagel and let it cool slightly so it is easier to spread the cream cheese. Mash avocado on one half of the bagel and lay red onion slices on top, and spread cream cheese on the other.
Step Two:
On top of the cream cheese, add your smoked salmon. We just bought a smoker (more info soon) and made HOMEMADE hot smoked salmon with dill, which is YUM by the way, but if you don’t want to use hot smoked salmon, you can totally use cold smoked salmon from any grocery store.
Step Three:
Now it’s time to add the arugula and make the arugula salad.
To make the salad, add about 1/2 tsp of lemon juice, 1/2 tsp of olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Mix well and add to the top of the avocado layer.
Step Four:
Now comes the trickiest part! Folding the sandwich in a way that doesn’t involve everything falling apart. I folded them together at the same time, rather than flipping one half on to the top of the other half.
Then, I cut the sandwich in half:
Overall, this is the best sandwich I have ever made. The salty smoked salmon, the creamy avocado and cream cheese, the AMAZING crunchy arugula and of course the Odd Bagel GF NY style everything bagel. You have to give this sandwich a try. It’s SO easy, and delicious.
