So… I did it! After making green juice in a blender for months, I finally got a real juicer. I read up on the reasons why not to make juice in a blender, and apparently the nutrient content of blender-made juice versus actual juicer-made juice pales in comparison.
This is a version of the juice I posted about earlier that was made in a blender, the difference with this recipe is mainly the ginger. It’s impossible to add ginger to a blender-made juice. It is just far too fibrous to be included. In a juicer, you can, which explains why this green juice is my ideal and the very best. It can include everything I want it to.
This recipe makes a little over 600 ml of juice, which for my family is about 3 servings. That being said, it stores really easily and can 100% be made in a double or triple batch to increase the output, just be sure to store it in an airtight container (we use mason jars).
Just like any green juice, one of the great things about this one is that you feel healthy drinking it. It’s chock full of vegetables and fruits, and there is no nutrient depletion from heating that comes from blending.
Ingredients –
Here are the ingredients:
Pineapple, celery, cucumber, green apple but really, you can use whatever kind of apple you like! I used Granny Smith because it’s more tart than other kinds, lemon, and ginger.
The pineapple is extremely high in vitamin C, manganese, and contains disease fighting antioxidants. Pineapple can also help with digestion, and suppress inflammation. In this time specifically, pineapple is a great addition to your diet to ensure a strong immune system!
Like pineapple, celery is also high in vitamin C and vitamin A. It can reduce inflammation, support good digestive health, and is especially high in antioxidants and micronutrients, while still extremely low in calories.
Cucumber is also high in micronutrients and low calorie. Their high water content helps with hydration and even promotes weight loss, although I primarily include it in the juice for its fresh flavor.
The apples are included to sweeten the juice up a little, so it’s not just savory vegetables. But, along with their flavor, apples promote good heart health, are high in micronutrients, and can lower your risk of diabetes.
Ginger is amazing for your digestive health. It has been used for hundreds of years for its digestive properties. It can be great for nausea, muscle pains and soreness the day after a workout, and lowering blood sugar.
Lemons can support heart health, regulate metabolism, prevent kidney stones, and protect the body against anemia. And like ginger, it can promote good digestive health.
Instructions –
So after gathering the ingredients, chop them into a size that your juicer can manage. My juicer is the AICOK slow masticating juicer, and it can handle chunks of produce about the size in this photo:
If you can, cut them as big as they can be… it’s certainly a time saver!
Let’s get into the recipe!
The Very Best Green Juice
Equipment
- Juicer
Ingredients
- 4 stalks celery
- 1 large cucumber
- 1/4 cored pineapple (don't juice the core!)
- 1 granny smith apple
- 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 inch square peeled ginger
Instructions
- Gather your ingredients and prepare them. Chop the celery stalk into 3 smaller stalks each, divide the cucumber into eighths, core and cube the apple, slice the pineapple into slightly larger than bite sized chunks, remove the peel and pith from the lemon, and peel the ginger.
- Turn on your juicer and add the ingredients, alternating. I like to add them in a pattern like the following: apple, celery, cucumber, pineapple, repeat. This way, it ensures the juice is all mixed up, and there aren't layers of cucumber juice, then pineapple juice, etc. Add the ginger and the lemon last, and then mix to incorporate.
- Store the juice in an airtight container for up to a few days such as in a mason jar, or drink immediately. (You can store with ice, or without. I typically store the juice without any ice in the mason jar, as to not dilute it. Then, I pour over ice to serve.)
- Enjoy!!
